// Bold lips, colorful smokey eyes, retro graphic eyeliner and more at NY Fashion Week! //
Written by Claire Mitchell / Edited by Sheila FeyFrom smokey eyes to high cheekbones, Mercedes Benz 2012 New York Fashion Week has highlighted the most talented make up trends for this upcoming Fall. MAC cosmetics took on a partnership with top fashion designers to match the face to the look of this year’s runway outfits. MAC had over 300 of their employees on board at over 85 shows, providing makeup looks for designers such as Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan New York, Alexander Wang, and Tommy Hilfiger. Over the years, MAC has had massive success in creating a flawless face for women, but did they also succeed at mixing the right face to the clothing style for fashion week?
MAC cosmetics took on an edgy playful role for Donna Karan’s Fall line. Sexy red eyeshadow paired with a lighter pink lip was spotted on the runway for Karan’s models. MAC makeup artist, Charlotte Tilbury explains that to match Donna Karan’s darker palettes of gray black and reds, “it’s all about the eyes”. For Tilbury, throwing on a classic red lip was not as outstanding as a crimson eyeshadow. Yes, having bright plump red lips makes quite the seductive statement, however it can be distracting from the outfit. Therefore we agree that Tilbury’s idea to brighten up the eyes with the red shadow was brilliant. (Seen below).

Although Donna Karan spiced up the runway with her choice of eyeshadow, designer Christian Siriano stood out best by using a dark purple to gaze attention towards the lips. Siriano’s muse surprisingly derives from a vampire bat. Yes, I said it right, a vampire bat. His strange inspiration collaborated perfectly with his designs from the runway. Lead MAC artist, Polly Osmond, explained that, “The pointed, dark lip look was supposed to appear similar to the wings of a vampire bat.” (Seen in the photo above). Polly continues to explain that in addition to “dark, creepy lips, the face is void of mascara, eyebrow pencil or eyeliner. A bit of blush and the lip shades are all it takes to turn these models into 1930′s vampire bats”. Polly created this look with MAC’s “Lip Pencil in Nightmoth” topped with “Mac Lipstick in Media” She then put on a finishing touch of gloss right before the models made their debut. Congratulations to Polly for turning a sinister vampire bat into a stunningly beautiful creature!

For Derek Lam’s show, Estee Lauder artists helped enhance his looks which screamed “naughty schoolgirl.” The inspiring teamwork produced from Estee Lauder’s Tom Pecheux and Derek Lam used “Invisible Fluid Makeup” to create a light foundation that supports a natural look. To continue with the earth tone colors, make up artists of Estee Lauder used a dark shimmering eyeshadow to have the model’s eyes pop. The colors used went along with the grayish color scheme Lam used for his outfits. Pecheux added some lines underneath the eyes to create the illusion of fake lashes to give the models a more naughty look.

NYX Cosmetics made their debut statement on the runway by
pairing up with Imitation of Christ. Bringing color to the runway, NYX
used a dark blue eyeshadow to help enhance the eyes, which inescapably
matched Imitation of Christ’s 70’s era theme. Tina Turnbow, NY’s makeup
artist for NYX, says that she wanted to “create a look by
NYX Cosmetics that was bold, yet distinctly feminine.” Designer of
Imitation by Christ, Tara Subkoff was more than thrilled to join forces
with Turnbow because of her wide range of color palette, which
ultimately corresponded with the clothing design color scheme of bright
blues and gold. (Seen below). It is most definitely pleasing to the eye to see a bit of color to brighten up the runway!
Betsy Johnson called in Charlotte Willer, Maybelline’s Key Makeup Artist to enhance the faces for her 1960’s glam-inspired designs. How? With a lot of pink! Because of this fun playful color scheme, Willer had to develop the models with a sweet enjoyable makeup palette. However, trying to steer away form too much pink, Willer also used “Caffeine Rush” Maybelline collection, which consists of lighter browns. To sparkle things up she had a three-peace glitter addition placed on the eyelids. A simple glisten is just what these models needed to add to the femininity that Betsy wanted.

Prabal Gurung won our vote for most exotic eye makeup, inspired by an Avatar look. Charlotte Tilbury of MAC Cosmetics, who also worked with Donna Karan, talks about working with Gurung on his striking look saying, “The makeup ended up feeling a bit Avatar-ish. But also like, wild birds of paradise. Beetles. Peacocks.”

Tilbury’s mix of teal and green following up the model’s brow line created such a bright electric effect that went perfect with Prabal Gurung’s runway style of bright blues and sequined gold outfits accompanied by a feathery bird look. (Seen below).
